Boken Walkabout

Färdigt tema för år 7

Sjuornas första tema för året är kring Australien och boken Walkabout. Boken är skriven av James Vance Marshall. Boken vi läser är mycket enkel och en Penguin Reader på level 2.

Eleverna är inte vana vid att läsa skönlitteratur så jag hjälper dem väldigt mycket. Vi arbetar med förförståelse, tittar på bilder, diskuterar svåra ord utöver att jag högläser hela boken. Elever älskar högläsning särskilt om man läser med olika röster och lite drama.

Vår kommun har turen att ha avtal med Avmedia Skåne så att jag enkelt kan låna böcker där.

Jag har mina elever två lektioner i veckan á 60 minuter. Då det är första gången de läser vill jag ha koll på att alla är med och att de förstår. Därför väljer jag att ha läsningen i klassrummet och jag styr.

We are going to read a book called Walkabout, which is written by James Vance Marshall.

Take a look at the cover of the book.


1. Discuss: (Take notes so you remember what you have talked about.)

  • Describe the picture. What do you see on the cover?
  • When you see the word Walkabout what do you think it means?
  • How old do you think the boy is?
  • Where do you think the story takes place? How do you know?
  • What do you think will happen in the book?

2. Reading! 

  • I am going to read chapter one and two aloud.
  • Listen and underline words that you don't understand.

3. Vocabulary! 

  • Every group gathers 10 words from the first two chapters that you don't understand or find hard to spell .
  • Login to where we are creating our own word list.
  • Translate the words and then add them to the wordlist. (Eleverna får mina inloggningsuppgifter till min lärarQuizlet. På så sätt har jag allt på ett ställe och vi gör en gemensam istället många olika.)

4. Discuss chapter 1 and 2 

  • What is a man-child?
  • What do the Aboriginals do when a child is sixteen?
  • Do you have any celebration when you turn sixteen?
  • What would you do if you were Peter and Mary?
  • How would you find food or water?

5. Writing! Chapter 1 and 2 

Individually - open your Google document and answer the questions below:

  • Who are in the book?
  • Where are they?
  • What happened?
  • Why?

5. Create! 

Mary and Peter’s relatives in the US don’t think the children are dead.

  • Open Postermywall Länk till annan webbplats. and create missing posters for Mary and Peter.
  • Show me when you are finished. We will vote for the three nicest and those will be published on the blog.
  • On the web page "Poster my wall" you can see many different examples of a poster. Design your own and make it special!

6. Homework!

On page 12, we are told that ‘At home in Charleston, South Carolina, no black person came near white people.’

  • Find information about how blacks were treated in South Carolina before the 1950s, when the Walkabout was written. Write down 5-10 sentences about it and bring to class.

1. Homework check! 

  1. Where in the world are we? Together we take a look at the map using Google Earth.
  2. Tell each other about "how blacks were treated in South Carolina before the 1950s, when the Walkabout was written.

2. Reading! 

I am going to read chapter 3, 4 and 5 aloud.

3. Discussing! 

  1. Have you ever gone to another country when nobody spoke your language? How did you feel?
  2. If you haven't - how do you think you would feel?
  3. Is Mary afraid of, angry with or in love with the bush boy?
  4. What is a mugga-wood?
  5. Why does the bush boy want to die there? Will the boy die there or will the children help him? Why/Why not?
  6. What do you think Uncle Keith did when he understood that the children were lost in the desert?
  7. The children have changed in the story. What were they like at the beginning of the story and what are they like now?

4. Reading, understanding and writing!

The class will be divided into 3 different groups. Together we are going to take a look at the text from different perspectives.

Open a Google document and help each other in the group. Make sure everyone is active. Share your texts with me:

Group 1 will write Mary’s thoughts about the bush boy.

  • What does she think about the bush buy?
  • Does she like him? Dislike him?
  • How do you know? Add quotes from the text to support your text.
  • Mary thinks that the bush boy is...  because... On page.... we can read that.... , which means that Mary thinks..

Group 2 will write Peter’s thoughts about the bush boy.


Group 3 will write the bush boy’s thoughts about Mary and Peter.


Then, we are going to put the different perspectives together to one text and we will take a look at the similarities and differences.

5. Speaking individually

Imagine that Mary and Peter finally arrive in Adelaide and they find a smartphone. The phone is open and you see that Snapchat seems to be working even if it is someone else's account. You now have the opportunity to create a new My Story and post it. Hopefully, you will now have a chance to find Uncle Keith.

How to do it: 
If you have your own Snapchat account - send me a short snapchat where you pretend to be either Mary or Peter. Explain what has happened to you, who you need to find and why. My Snapchat nickname is: Piggelin2 (Sara Bruun).

If you don't have Snapchat, use your Chromebook instead. Make sure you have the add-on Screencastify installed on your computer. Film yourself and send the film to me in Google Classroom. (Copy the link to the film, Open Google Classroom, Open the task, Add link, Send to me) I will show you how to do this, don't worry!

6. Writing individually

A bit further away you suddenly find a notebook and a pencil. You are now able to write a letter to the local newspaper and ask for help.

Imagine that you are either Mary or Peter. Describe what has happened to you, where you are, that you are looking for Uncle Keith and that you need help to find him.
