We also ask the president to reaffirm Turkey's international commitment to protect and promote women’s and girls’ human rights and to preserve and defend universal and fundamental values.

Risk of violence in schools and a higher drop-out rate

The impact of the withdrawal from the Istanbul convention will be devasting for girls and women in Turkey. The impact will also be seen in the education sector where cases of violence and harassment on women teachers and girls already occur.

The lack of protection from the Istanbul Convention risks leading not only to a rise of violence in schools but also to a higher drop-out rate, pushing girls out of the education system and undermining women and girls' status in all segments of the society.

Therefore, the National Union of Teachers in Sweden calls on president Erdogan to reverse the decision to pull out of Istanbul Convention on Prevention of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence Länk till annan webbplats. and reaffirm Turkey's international commitment to protect and promote women’s and girls’ human rights and to preserve and defend universal and fundamental values. The call is made together with Egitim-Sen Länk till annan webbplats., a union for education workers in Turkey, who also is a member of ETUCE Länk till annan webbplats..
